Junk Pickup Across Richardson, TX

From the mid-century streets near Belt Line to the newer homes north of Campbell, junk pickup for every part of Richardson.

A Railroad Town That Became a Tech City

Richardson takes its name from Alfred S. Richardson, secretary of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad, and was incorporated in 1925, as its history records. It stayed small until the 1950s. Then Central Expressway and the opening of Texas Instruments' offices nearby set off a boom, from about 1,300 residents in 1950 to more than 48,000 by 1970.

Today the city covers 28 square miles across Dallas and Collin counties, with UT Dallas inside its limits and DART rail stations from Spring Valley to CityLine. The housing reflects every stage of that growth, and so does the junk.

How Richardson's Bulky Item Service Works

Richardson collects bulky items by request rather than on a fixed schedule. According to the city's Brush and Bulky Item Collection page:

  • What qualifiesLarge items, generally over 50 pounds, that don't fit in normal trash. Lighter items go with the twice-weekly trash.
  • How to requestThrough the MyRichardson app, online, or by calling 972-744-4111, by midnight the night before.
  • Where items goOn the grassy parkway between the sidewalk and the street, close to the curb, by 7 a.m.
  • LimitsThe city asks residents to limit requests to eight a year, and waste must come from your own property.
  • EnforcementItems set out without a request bring a warning, then citations.

When Hiring Makes More Sense

The city service is a good deal for one big item that can reach the curb. It is not built for a full garage, an upstairs bedroom set, an estate, an office or remodel debris. Those are the jobs worth hiring out. The estimate is free, and if the city would handle it, you will hear that.

What Piles Up in Richardson

West-side ranch houses from the 1950s and 1960s tend to produce attic furniture, garage workshops and estate cleanouts. Newer homes in the north produce moving boxes, outgrown kids' furniture and exercise equipment. Apartments near UT Dallas and the office corridors turn over constantly, leaving mattresses, desks and couches at every lease end.

Dallas County or Collin County, Same Service

Richardson is split between two counties: roughly two-thirds in Dallas County and the rest in Collin County. That split matters for some services, such as which county household chemical program you use, but not for junk removal. The same call, the same hours and the same free estimate cover the whole city, from Spring Valley in the south to the CityLine area in the northeast.

Hours are 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, Monday through Sunday. Same-day service may be available, depending on the schedule and the size of the job.
